Cowboys Confirm Final Decision On Daniel Jones After Giants Release

“We believe that Daniel has the potential to be a franchise quarterback in this league,” said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. “He’s a proven winner who has led the Giants to the playoffs in two of the last three years.”

Jones, 25, was drafted by the Giants with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He started 50 games for New York, throwing for 8,493 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions.

The Giants released Jones on Thursday as part of a salary cap purge. The move came as a surprise to many, as Jones had been considered the team’s franchise quarterback.

“This was a difficult decision, but we felt it was necessary to move on,” said Giants general manager Joe Schoen. “We wish Daniel all the best in his future endeavors.”

The Cowboys are in need of a quarterback after Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending thumb injury in Week 5. Cooper Rush has started the last five games for Dallas, but the Cowboys are looking for an upgrade.

Jones is expected to visit the Cowboys on Monday. If he signs with Dallas, he will likely compete with Rush for the starting job.

“We’re excited about the possibility of adding Daniel to our team,” said Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy. “He’s a talented player who has a lot of upside.”

The signing of Jones would be a major coup for the Cowboys. He is a young, talented quarterback who has shown the ability to win games. If he can stay healthy and reach his full potential, he could be the long-term answer at quarterback for Dallas.
