Dodgers Continue to Bolster Bullpen with Addition of Kirby Yates

Dodgers add Kirby Yates to bullpen

The Dodgers are closing in on a deal with right-handed reliever Kirby Yates.

The Dodgers have been active this offseason, adding star Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki on Friday and agreeing to a four-year contract with top free-agent reliever Tanner Scott on Sunday. Now, they are reportedly close to adding another big name to their bullpen in Yates, a two-time All-Star.

Yates is a veteran reliever who had a resurgent 2024 season with the Texas Rangers.

The 38-year-old Yates posted a 1.17 earned-run average in 61 outings last year, good enough to earn his second All-Star selection while amassing 33 saves. That performance continued a positive trend for the 10-year veteran following a 2021 Tommy John surgery.

The Dodgers have viewed the bullpen as an area of need this offseason.

Daniel Hudson retired at the end of last season, Joe Kelly became a free agent, and Brusdar Graterol underwent offseason shoulder surgery that is expected to sideline him for the first half of next season. Other returning contributors, such as Alex Vesia, Evan Phillips, and Anthony Banda, all missed time late last season because of injuries.

The addition of Yates gives the Dodgers another experienced arm in their bullpen.

Blake Treinen, who re-signed on a two-year, $22-million contract, and Michael Kopech, a key trade deadline acquisition last July, were figured to be the Dodgers’ top relief options entering the season. But Treinen is 36 and only two years removed from a major shoulder injury. Kopech, meanwhile, could be in danger of missing the start of next season due to arm inflammation.

The Dodgers continue to collect talent this offseason.

The addition of Yates is just the latest in a series of moves the Dodgers have made this offseason to improve their team. They have also added Sasaki and two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell to their starting rotation. With these additions, the Dodgers are looking to contend for a World Series title in 2025.
