Jeffries Demands "maximum Protection" For Members After Bomb Threats

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has called for “maximum protection” for members of Congress following a series of bomb threats against their offices. On Thursday, law enforcement officials intercepted and detonated a bomb package addressed to Jeffries’ Brooklyn office. Similar threats have targeted other Democratic legislators, including Reps. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Adam Schiff (D-CA).

Jeffries expressed his concern over the threats, stating that they “represent a grave and unacceptable threat to our democracy.” The threats come amid heightened political tensions in the wake of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Law enforcement agencies have increased patrols and security measures around the Capitol complex and members’ offices. The Capitol Police has enhanced its security operations and deployed additional officers to protect members. The House Sergeant-at-Arms has also increased security measures, including installing metal detectors and conducting additional screenings.

The bomb threats have been widely condemned by both Democrats and Republicans. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called the threats “cowardly and despicable.” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said that “threats against any member of Congress are an attack on our entire democracy.”

The FBI and Capitol Police are actively investigating the bomb threats. Law enforcement officials have urged the public to report any suspicious activity or information to the authorities.

Jeffries and other targeted members have expressed their appreciation for the increased security measures and the support of their colleagues. Jeffries called for unity and resolve in the face of these threats, stating that “we must not be deterred from carrying out our duties.”

The ongoing investigation into the bomb threats is expected to continue, and law enforcement officials are working to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice. The increased security measures are likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future to ensure the safety of members of Congress and the Capitol complex.
