The Grizzlies, who had lost their previous two games, stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from forwards Seth Jarvis and Chase Lang. The Penguins, led by superstar Sidney Crosby, rallied to tie the game in the second, but Utah would not be denied.
“We knew they were going to come out hard after tying it up,” said Grizzlies defenseman and captain Tyler Soy. “But we kept our focus and stayed disciplined.”
In the third period, the Grizzlies dealt the knockout blow with goals from forward Brayden Point and defenseman Nick Seeler. Point’s goal, which proved to be the game-winner, came on a power play after a controversial hooking call against Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin.
“It was a tough call, but I’ll take it,” Point said. “It’s huge for our team to get a win like this.”
Crosby, who had been held scoreless through the first two periods, scored his 18th goal of the season late in the third, but it was too little, too late for the Penguins.
“They were a hungry team tonight,” Crosby said of the Grizzlies. “They played with a lot of energy and kept us on our toes. We just didn’t have enough left in the tank.”
The victory marks the first time the Grizzlies have defeated the Penguins in their franchise history. It also snapped Pittsburgh’s five-game winning streak and dropped them out of first place in the Metropolitan Division.
“This is a huge moment for our organization,” said Grizzlies head coach Ryan Huska. “It shows that we can compete with anyone in this league, and it’s a great confidence booster for our players.”
The Grizzlies will look to continue their momentum when they host the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. The Penguins, meanwhile, will try to rebound when they visit the New York Islanders on Saturday.
