Pittman’s current contract, which runs through 2026, contains a massive buyout clause of $18 million. However, the terms of the buyout are staggered, decreasing each year.
The recent win over Cincinnati triggers a significant reduction in Pittman’s buyout amount. According to the contract, the buyout is reduced to $12.6 million if Arkansas finishes the season with eight wins.
The win has strengthened Pittman’s position in negotiations with the university administration. If Arkansas continues to perform well this season, Pittman could use the reduced buyout as leverage to secure a contract extension or a pay raise.
“This win is a huge step for Pittman and Arkansas,” said college football analyst Paul Finebaum. “It puts him in a much better position financially and gives him more stability in the program.”
“The buyout is still significant, but it’s certainly a lot more manageable now,” added former Arkansas quarterback Matt Jones.
Pittman took over as head coach at Arkansas in 2020 after a stint at Georgia as an assistant. He led the Razorbacks to a 3-7 record in his first season, but the team improved to 9-4 last year, earning a bowl game appearance.
Arkansas’ next game is on Saturday, September 17th, against South Carolina. A victory would further strengthen Pittman’s standing and place the Razorbacks in contention for a berth in the SEC Championship Game. The outcome of the season will ultimately determine how much Arkansas is willing to invest in keeping their head coach.
